History of the School of Management Walailak University

Walailak’s School of Management, formerly called “School of Management Science”, has been established under the Walailak University Act since 1992 (2535 B.E.) with the purpose of producing graduates, establishing research and providing academic services in management sciences. In addition, the school has aimed at being a centre for academics and researches in Thailand’s upper-southern provinces for management sciences and relevant disciplines. The School of Management introduced the first cohort of 120 accounting and economic students in 1998.

In a transformative development, the School of Management at Walailak University has charted a remarkable journey since its inception. Originally established as the “Faculty of Management Sciences” in 1992 by the Walailak University Act, it embarked on a mission to nurture graduates, advance research, and provide scholarly services in the management domain. Its goal was to become a central academic and research institution for management studies, particularly in Thailand’s Upper Southern region. The faculty has reached several milestones over the years:

In 2019, the School of Management undertook a significant overhaul of its Business Administration curriculum, transforming it from a single program with various majors into three distinct and specialized programs: Business Administration in Finance, Digital Marketing and Branding, and Logistics Management. This comprehensive curriculum redesign was aimed at addressing market demands and preparing students for future career advancements in their respective fields.

In 2022, School of Management undertook the separation of its Economics, Finance, and Accounting programs to establish a new specialized Faculty of Accounting and Finance. This change was aimed at efficiently meeting future educational needs and demands. This update was designed to align with modern times and respond to labor market demands.

With the continuous expansion of the SM, including increases in student enrollment, staff, a range of programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels, research outputs, and widely recognized academic services, the separation of faculties in 2022, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of Walailak University’s establishment and the 25th anniversary of the Faculty of Management accepting students, marked a significant change. This was aimed at enhancing the agility and flexibility in management and educational development.

By 2022, it strategically separated Economics, Finance, and Accounting courses to establish a new Faculty of Accounting and Finance, aiming to more effectively meet future educational needs and demands.

As of 2024, the Faculty of Management comprises three departments and four state-of-the-art programs that prioritize a student-centered learning approach, aligned with industry needs and digital era adaptations. These programs are:

  1. Bachelor of Business Administration in Logistics Management.
  2. Bachelor of Business Administration in Digital Marketing and Branding.
  3. Bachelor of Business Administration in Tourism and Hotel Management.
  4. Bachelor of Business Administration in Professional Culinary Arts.

Envisioned as a “Gateway to Achievement,” the Faculty is committed to fostering success among students, businesses, governmental agencies, organizations, and local communities. This commitment is supported by the faculty’s rich blend of teaching, research, and industry expertise. Adhering to the high standards set by the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF), the faculty also offers a cooperative education program, providing senior students with eight months of pre-graduation professional experience, thus preparing them for a competitive job market and ensuring they graduate as highly skilled professionals.

As of April 1, 2024, the Faculty of Management employs a total of 32 staff, including 8 operational and 24 academic personnel, with 10 holding doctoral degrees, 11 master’s degrees, and 4 currently pursuing further studies. The academic team includes 3 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, and 15 Lecturers, serving a total of 844 students across it’s innovative programs:

  • Logistics Management with 279 students,
  • Digital Marketing and Branding with 277 students,
  • Tourism and Hospitality Management with 153 students,
  • Professional Culinary Arts with 135 students.

This account highlights the School’s steadfast commitment to achieving excellence in business management education, research, and community involvement. It firmly establishes itself as a frontrunner in defining the future landscape of business and management academia.
